Digital Nomad Visa Requirements: Income, Documents & Eligibility

Income thresholds, document checklists, health insurance, and eligibility criteria — everything you need to qualify for a digital nomad visa in 2026.

Income Requirements

Every digital nomad visa has a minimum monthly income threshold. This proves you can support yourself without working locally. Thresholds range from as low as $750/month (Colombia) to $8,000/month (Iceland).

Most countries accept a combination of employment salary, freelance income, investment returns, or pension. You'll typically need to show 3–6 months of consistent income through bank statements.

Tip: If your income fluctuates (common for freelancers), aim for the months with the highest earnings when selecting your bank statement period. Some countries look at averages rather than individual months.

Standard Document Checklist

While each country has specific requirements, here's the universal checklist that covers 90% of digital nomad visa applications.

Identity & Travel

  • Valid passport (6+ months remaining)
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Return or onward travel booking

Financial Proof

  • Bank statements (3–6 months)
  • Employment contract or freelance proof
  • Tax returns (some countries)

Health & Safety

  • Health insurance certificate
  • Criminal background check
  • Medical certificate (some countries)

Accommodation

  • Lease agreement or booking
  • Host invitation letter (if applicable)
  • Proof of address in destination

Insurance Requirements

Nearly all digital nomad visas require health insurance valid in the destination country. Most European countries specify a minimum coverage of €30,000, while others simply require "adequate" coverage.

Travel insurance typically won't qualify — you need comprehensive health insurance that covers medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation. Read our full insurance guide for detailed options.

General Eligibility Criteria

Beyond income and documents, most countries require:

Remote employment or self-employment

You must work for a company or clients outside the destination country. Freelancers, employees, and business owners all qualify.

Clean criminal record

A police clearance certificate from your home country, typically no older than 3–6 months. Some countries also check your record in countries where you've recently lived.

No prior immigration violations

Overstays, deportations, or visa denials in the destination country (or Schengen zone for EU countries) can disqualify your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as "proof of income" for freelancers?
Freelancers can show bank statements with regular deposits, client contracts, invoices, and tax returns. Some countries accept a letter from your accountant confirming your annual income. Having 3–6 months of statements showing consistent deposits above the threshold is ideal.
Do I need to speak the local language?
No digital nomad visa programs require local language proficiency. However, application forms and supporting documents may need to be translated into the local language or English depending on the country.
What if my income is in crypto?
Most countries require income deposited in a traditional bank account. Crypto earnings may be accepted if they're converted to fiat and reflected in your bank statements. Portugal and Estonia are more crypto-friendly, while more conservative countries may not accept crypto as proof of income.
