Overview

Estonia made history in August 2020 by becoming the first country in the world to launch a dedicated digital nomad visa. As the world's most digitally advanced society — birthplace of Skype, with 99% of government services online — Estonia was a natural pioneer. The DNV allows remote workers earning at least €3,504/month to live in Estonia for up to one year.

Estonia's e-Residency program, launched in 2014, already attracted a global community of digital entrepreneurs. The DNV builds on this digital-first identity, offering remote workers the chance to experience Tallinn's medieval Old Town, Estonia's vast forests and coastline, and one of Europe's most innovative tech ecosystems.

Tax Rules for Digital Nomads in Estonia

Estonia has a unique tax system: corporate profits are only taxed when distributed (0% on reinvested profits). For individuals, the flat income tax rate is 20%. Digital nomad visa holders who do not become Estonian tax residents (presence under 183 days) may not be subject to Estonian income tax. If you stay more than 183 days, you become tax resident and the 20% flat rate applies to worldwide income. Estonia has no municipal income taxes or social tax for non-resident nomads.

Cost of Living in Estonia

Estonia is affordable by Nordic/Scandinavian standards but more expensive than Southern or Eastern Europe. Tallinn is the main hub; Tartu (university city) is cheaper.

Estonia Digital Nomad Visa FAQ

What is the difference between e-Residency and the digital nomad visa?
e-Residency gives you a digital identity to manage an Estonian business remotely from anywhere. The digital nomad visa gives you the right to physically live in Estonia. They serve different purposes but complement each other.
Is Tallinn good for digital nomads?
Yes. Tallinn has a thriving startup scene, excellent coworking spaces (Lift99 is the most famous), fast internet, and a compact medieval Old Town. The community is smaller than Lisbon or Barcelona but very tight-knit.
How cold does it get in Estonia?
Winter temperatures range from -5°C to -20°C (23°F to -4°F). Daylight in December is just 6 hours. Summers are pleasant (15-25°C) with nearly 24 hours of daylight in June.
