Overview
Japan launched its digital nomad visa in March 2024, opening one of the world's most fascinating countries to remote workers for the first time. The visa allows citizens of 49 tax-treaty countries to live and work remotely in Japan for up to 6 months. The income requirement is ¥10,000,000 per year (approximately $68,000 USD), making it one of the higher thresholds globally.
The visa targets high-earning professionals and reflects Japan's careful approach to immigration. Despite the high income bar, the program has been enormously popular — Japan offers an unmatched blend of ancient culture, cutting-edge technology, exceptional safety, legendary cuisine, and efficient transportation that no other country can replicate.

Tax Rules for Digital Nomads in Japan
Digital nomad visa holders in Japan are classified as non-residents for tax purposes (staying less than 183 days in a calendar year). Non-residents are only taxed on Japan-sourced income. Since your work is for a foreign employer, your income is not Japan-sourced and therefore not subject to Japanese income tax. Consumption tax (10%) applies to purchases but this is standard for all residents and visitors.
Cost of Living in Japan
Japan is more expensive than Southeast Asia but competitive with Europe. Tokyo is the priciest city, but Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka, and smaller cities offer excellent value with all the benefits of Japanese infrastructure.
